SPECIALTY BUILDS

Got a project that doesn't fit the textbook mould? This is where we do our best work - unconventional designs, tricky sites, and the jobs other builders won't take on.

Riki cut his teeth on exactly these kinds of projects. That grounding shows up in how he approaches every unusual project since — methodical, resourceful, and comfortable working outside a standard set of plans.

We work with clients who don't want a one-size-fits-all solution. If you want a small, hands-on team who'll build something genuinely yours, that's us. Our contracts are flexible to suit how involved you want to be — go on holiday and we'll hand you the keys when you're back, or get stuck in and swing a hammer alongside us on weekends if that's more your speed.

Recent specialty projects

  • Rural home build, Whangamatā — a new home on a steep rural site with no existing access or services. Riki surveyed the land, cut the access road, and designed the home to suit the slope before handing plans to an architect to finalise.

  • Rainbow Cottage Early Childhood Centre — full renovation converting a house into an under-2s space, plus a new carpark and road access. Riki hand-amended the original access plans (which weren't fit for purpose) and got council approval directly, saving the owner thousands.

  • Laser Electrical — commercial shop fit-out

  • Opoutere School — a large deck addition complete with pirate wheel water pump and waterway.

  • Opoutere Coastal Camping — storm damage repair and reinstatement.

  • Smokey Pallet — storm damage repair and reinstatement.

  • Client cabin build — a new removable cabin build on-site

What we cover

  • Unconventional and non-standard designs

  • Institutional and commercial projects (schools, early childhood centres, community facilities)

  • Weathertightness and leaky home repairs

  • Insurance repairs — storm, flood and water damage reinstatement

  • Remote or hard-to-access sites

Reinstatement and repair work is built to the same New Zealand Building Code standard as any other job — Riki's LBP qualification means restricted building work, like weathertightness and cladding repairs, is handled correctly the first time.

Our subcontractors

A build is only as good as the trades behind it. Over the years we've built relationships with the best plumbers, electricians, and specialist trades in Whangamatā, the same proven people on every job.

We work across Whangamatā, Onemana, Opoutere, Whiritoa, Pauanui and Tairua.

FAQ

What counts as a "specialty build"?
Anything outside a standard home build or renovation — unconventional designs, difficult sites, institutional or commercial projects, cabins, or repair work like leaky homes and insurance reinstatement.

Do you work directly with insurance companies?
Yes. We manage the building side of insurance claims — scoping damage, pricing reinstatement works, and liaising with insurers and loss adjusters through to sign-off.

Can you take on schools, early childhood centres or commercial projects?
Yes — alongside residential work we take on institutional and commercial jobs, including sites with additional requirements like operating around children or the public, as well as retail and commercial fit-outs.

Do you build cabins or sleepouts?
Yes — we're currently underway on a client cabin build. Get in touch to talk through what you're after.

What if my site is hard to access?
We have direct experience with remote and access-challenged sites. If a standard truck and trailer can't get there, talk to us anyway.

How involved can I be in my own project?
As much or as little as you like — our contracts are flexible enough to suit either approach.
